Exciting future for Rugby League in primary schools

Date published: Tuesday, December 10, 2013

The RFL has launched an exciting new resource for Primary Schools that will help teachers and coaches deliver high quality and fun physical activity sessions for children aged between five and 11.

The ‘Primary Schools Rugby League Offer’ supports the physical development of young people and has been developed in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust (YST) in line with the Key Stage 1, Lower Key Stage 2 and Upper Key Stage 2 physical literacy framework.

It follows on from the announcement that the Government has ring-fenced £450 million to enable schools to provide enhanced opportunities for physical activity for primary school children.

The funding has been introduced to ensure every child, aged five to 11 years, has access to regular physical education and that primary school teachers have the materials, confidence and skills needed to deliver high quality coaching sessions.

In recent months the RFL has engaged and supported 11 Super League Club Foundations to deliver the new programme. With the full support of the YST, the RFL has delivered bespoke training days in the North West and Yorkshire exploring KS1 Start to Move principles, mentoring and orientation.

The involvement of the Foundations ensures effective mentoring for the teachers who are delivering the resource.

RFL Director of Participation and Strategic Partnerships David Gent said: “Using a recognised framework for physical literacy, we have created a programme that gives children of all abilities an enjoyable and positive experience playing Rugby League.

“The approved Rugby League ‘deliverers’ will teach children fundamental movement skills, and exciting parts of the sport such as running, evading and scoring tries.

“Primary school children will also be introduced to game-based experiences, providing the opportunity to test their abilities and assess their competencies in a supportive and encouraging environment.”

YST Managing Director, Alison Oliver said: “The YST is committed to the delivery of physical education by teachers and the extension of after school sport through both teachers and coaches. The RFL’s Primary School Rugby League Offer will support schools build the knowledge, confidence and skills to ensure sustainable, long term improvements in PE while adding value and capacity to after school sport.”
