RETIRED labourer Eric Kenworthy will be laughing all the way to Skegness this summer after scooping a £1,000 jackpot prize on Oldham Rugby League Club’s Club Cash lottery.
John McAndrew, a happy Eric Kenworthy, Chris Clarke“I’m going there on holiday with my brother Stephen in July, and this will pay for it with a bit left over,” said 65-year-old Eric, of Salisbury Street, High Crompton.
When he was a boy he used to be taken to Oldham’s game at Watersheddings by his father and he later played himself in local amateur rugby as a scrum-half.
“I don’t watch Roughyeds these days,” he added, “but I’m happy to support them with £1 a week on the lottery — and I’m even happier now I’ve won this.
“I never thought I would win. But you don’t miss £1 a week, you’re helping your local club . . . and Stephen and I are going to have a good time in Skegness!”
Roughyeds loose-forward Chris Clarke and the club’s lottery co-ordinator John McAndrew dropped in on Eric at his home to present him with the cheque.
His prize was the maximum £1,000 on a £50-a-week rollover jackpot which accumulates up to that amount each week it isn’t won. Club Cash also has guaranteed weekly prizes of £300 and £100.
Said John: “The lottery provides the club with vital income all year round. Lots of fans are in it, but we also have loads of people who never watch Roughyeds, but who know that for an outlay of £1 a week they have a chance of winning decent prizes.
“Eric knew he had a chance to win — and that’s what he’s done.”
To join Club Cash (you can pay by cheque, direct debit or to a collector on the doorstep once a fortnight) ring the Roughyeds office on 0161 628 3677 or leave your contact details with any member of staff at Sunday’s game at Whitebank against Swinton Lions (3pm kick off).
