England expecting Fiji to be a big hit

Kallum Watkins is expecting a tough match against Fiji when England play their last World Cup Group A game at the KC Stadium, Hull, on Saturday (2.30pm).

The Leeds Rhinos centre knows it will be a testing, physical game against the Fijians but believes England can take a lot of positives out of a commanding victory against Ireland last week.

“We are expecting a tough game with lots of big hits and hard collisions from Fiji, based on how we have already seen them play, and we need to go out and match up to that,” said Watkins.

“The score against Ireland was a massive confidence boost for us and gave us a lot of positives to take into the game this week. We were really happy with the way we played, the second half maybe did not go as well as we had hoped but we can certainly look at the first half for a lot of encouragement.

“There are certain areas that we need to improve on and we will look at those in training. Fiji are a tough, physical side so we need to be up for that and we will definitely be working on our tackling. We just need to keep improving on what we have already built and come up with a good performance for the full game.”

Watkins has been enjoying the atmosphere that has surrounded the RLWC 2013 and feels the game on Saturday is crucial for England if they want to progress further in the tournament.

“The crowds have been brilliant,” said Watkins. “It is a credit to the fans for buying tickets and it will be great if they can fill the KC Stadium because it is one of my favourite stadiums to play in.

“The Hull fans are usually quite loud and so it is going to be a really enjoyable experience and a great game for the fans to watch too.

“We need to focus on this game and build up some momentum. If we get a good result on Saturday then it will set us up really well heading into the quarter-finals.”
