Encouraging performance for u 18’s

OUR squad of young hopefuls in the under-18s, playing in the newly-named Championship Scholarship, had their first run-out at York on a night of horrendous rain and sleet and produced an encouraging performance despite going down 28-6.

The Huntington Stadium pitch was awash with pools of water all over it, but because it was firm underneath the water the match officials felt it was safe to play so both clubs agreed that it should go ahead.

Players of both sides deserve to be congratulated for the level of performance they maintained in what were without doubt some of the worst conditions they are ever likely to experience again on a rugby field.

Our try was scored by hooker Liam Sargeant and goaled by Craig Lawton. The Roughyeds forwards did especially well as a pack with Sargeant and prop-forward Josh Wakefield often catching the eye.

Said coach Phil Costin: “Credit goes to both teams for what they produced in those conditions. It never stopped lashing it down from start to finish.

“From our perspective it was always going to be a little bit hit and miss because it was our first game of the year and we have a lot of new players in the squad this time.

“I was really pleased with a lot of the boys while some of them have a bit of work to do, but that’s what we are here for and we will be working hard over the coming weeks and months as the season progresses.”

The Oldham squad for 2012 comprises of Chris Ashbrook, Andrew Ball, Jake Boardman, Ben Breheney, Jack Breheney, Tom Breheney, Chris Durkan, Mark Eastup, Jake Evans, Tom Flanagan, Patrick Fitzsimons, Josh Hulme, Sam Hughes, Ben Kenwright, Craig Lawton, Tom Mallinson, Aaron Morris, Jordan Morris, Nick Ryan, Liam Sargeant, Jack Sherratt, Josh Wakefield, Adam White, Richard Ward and Stephen Woods.

Ashbrook, Boardman, Durkan, Flanagan, Fitzsimons, Hughes, Kenwright, Mallinson, Sargeant, Sherratt, Wakefield, White, Ward and Woods are all new signings this year, but the only local boys in the squad are Fitzsimons, Hulme and Ryan.
