CHILDREN from Broadfield Primary School at Hathershaw raised £100 for Sport Relief 2012 on a sponsored walk from school to Oldham Rugby League Club’s Whitebank ground at Limehurst Village.

A dozen children, aged eight to 11, walked the 2.2 miles to Whitebank where they were welcomed by rugby club chairman Chris Hamilton before watching the Roughyeds beat Gateshead Thunder 40-14 to go top of Co-operative Championship One.

For most of the children it was the first time they had watched a rugby league game.

Said Elaine Jolley, a learning mentor at Broadfield: “The walk launched the school’s Sport Relief Week and it was a cracking way to kick it off.

“The children absolutely loved the rugby. They were very vocal in support of Oldham and they went on a lap of honour at half-time.

“They wanted me to take them again to the next home game against Barrow on April 1, but I’ve told them we’ll try to arrange another visit later in the season.”

The school has various other fund-raising events planned during this Sport Relief Week, involving children, staff and parents.
