Briscoe lined up for a scanDate published: Tuesday, February 9, 2016
OLDHAM RL new boy Craig Briscoe is to have a scan on his damaged knee amid fears that the injury might be more serious than first thought.
Signed from Barrow Raiders, the 22-year-old back-row forward was hurt in his second game for Roughyeds when he was tackled near the Raiders line in a pre-season game against his former club.
He missed the Law Cup win at Rochdale and the first Championship game against London Broncos and there are concerns that he will miss more matches as the club tries to establish the full extent of the problem.
He’s been examined by the medical staff at the Roughyeds’ partner club Huddersfield Giants, who think he might have damaged the knee bone.
Half-back Danny Grimshaw, another new signing this year, missed the 22-0 defeat by Broncos at Stalybridge with calf and ankle injuries, but he will be assessed at training tonight ahead of Sunday’s game at Leigh Centurions (3pm).
Prop Jack Spencer, who suffered a deep gash close to an eye in the London game, and half-back Lewis Palfrey (calf) will also be checked out.
Rocked by head coach Paul Rowley’s shock resignation a fortnight ago, red-hot title favourites Leigh were left reeling again on the opening day of the Championship campaign when they lost 24-22 at Batley.
So much for owner Derek Beaumont’s forecast that Centurions would win every game in the Championship.
Kiwi Test star Rangi Chase, who played full-back at Batley, is expected to switch to his more familiar half-back role, while former Wigan and Salford pack ace Gareth Hock is likely to be recalled to the forwards as new coach Neil Jukes looks to take out his opening-day frustrations on Oldham.
Roughyeds fans are reminded there are no cash turnstiles at Leigh Sports Village so time needs to be allowed for queuing at the ticket office and then at the turnstiles, armed with a ticket.
Alternatively, for £50 a head, you can enjoy pre-match hospitality with two-course meal, guest speaker Tommy Goulden, team announcements, tea or coffee at half-time, interviews and main-stand seat.
