Bradford Bulls 60 Oldham 6

KENNY Hughes had the distinction of scoring our only try in a heavy defeat at Bradford Bulls in the fourth round of the Tetley’s Challenge Cup.
He crossed from dummy half midway through the first half, having come off the bench only a couple of minutes earlier as Danny Whitmore’s replacement.
Despite the scoreline, 60-6, coach Scott Naylor was proud of his team’s commitment, desire, attitude and willingness to work against all odds from start to finish.
The Super League men scored 11 tries, but they certainly knew they had been in a game, as confirmed afterwards by their coach Francis Cummins, who paid tribute to Oldham’s honest endeavour and concluded: “There were periods in the game when they made life difficult for us.”
Sam Gee played at centre in place of 19-year-old Edwin Okanga-Ajwang and young back-row forward George Tyson was given his debut off the bench.
Oldham’s forwards worked desperately hard from the start in a bid to stand up to Bradford’s pack giants and with half-time only one minute away they trailed only 18-6.
That score would have been a fair representation of the first-half play, but to concede another six points on the stroke of half-time was a cruel blow.
Worse still, Bulls scored two quick tries on the resumption, both from dummy half with the defence in disarray, and after that the visitors were always up against it.
Scott was delighted, however, with his team’s determination to give it their all from first minute to last and he hopes the squad can now replicate that level of performance in forthcoming league games, starting with the visit of Gateshead Thunder to Whitebank on Sunday (3pm).
