Benson’s thoughts

THIS is what coach Tony Benson said on the back of the Roughyeds’ 52-16 win at Gateshead.

“We had worked hard in training on going forward, and we were much better at it. As a result of that the half-backs were more involved.

“What we need to improve upon is in how to make better use of the ball when we have the momentum and good field position.

“Gateshead played well in the first 20 minutes, when it was areal arm-wrestle, but I was delighted to see how well we hung in, soaked up the pressure and then got back at them..

“In past matches this year there have been times when we’ve been a bit frail in these circumstances, but not today.

“Jason Boults and Luke Stenchion did a good job during the arm-wrestle and then Dave Ellison and Luke Sutton came off the bench and, to be honest, they were nothing short of immense.

“We played really well in the 20 minutes either side of half time but we fell away in the last quarter. We lost our way. There were various reasons for that, one of which was that I felt the game was won and I changed things around a bit with next week’s game against Whitehaven in mind. That disrupted us.

“The Leeds Rhinos boys, Callum and Danny, did really well, especially when you take into account that they have had only one week with us. Young Matthew Fogarty was also strong and hard-working, as were the wingers Mark Brocklehurst and Shaun Robinson..
