Barrow update

According to the North-West Evening Mail, Barrow player-coach Darren Holt is OUT of the big clash at Whitebank today (Sunday) because of a calf tear sustained in last week’s fiery cup tie against Lezignan.

The paper tells its readers that Holt’s place will go to either Scott Kaighan or — if James Dandy returns at hooker  — to Liam Finch.

Centre Aaron Low also misses out through injury and Jamie Butler has failed a test on a hamstring pull.

Full back Andy Ballard, the former Oldham winger, seems to think his elder brother Paul will be in action on the wing for Roughyeds.

He has told the paper: “It will be the first time I have played against him in competitive action.

“There’s always banter between us about anything we do, ut I’ve been giving it to him a bit more this week because I think we are the stronger side. I think we will batter them!”

Player-coach Holt said most members of his squad would be playing at Whitebank for the first time.

He added: “It’s unlike many other rugby league grounds and that is something our players will have to try and get their heads round before we can concentrate on how we are going to play.

“It’s the same for both teams. They will be used to it but at the end of the day its a piece of grass, a piece of turf.

“They will get home advantage because of their supporters, but it is still just a rugby pitch and the team that applies themselves and plays the better will win the game.

“Yes, it will be strange to go down there and play on that ground but after ten minutes, when they’ve had a look round, they should be okay and we know what we are going down there to do — to get another win.”
