‘Another step in the right direction’ – Scott

SCOTT Naylor always believed that, in travelling to Cheltenham to take on the University of Gloucestershire All Golds at the Prince of Wales Stadium, Oldham would first have to examine their own mental attitude before going out to test Gloucester’s.

He was acutely aware that this was a potential banana skin and he firmly believed the All Golds would relish a chance to claim the prized scalp of his high-flying Roughyeds as their first ‘northern’ win of the season.
They had, after all, taken Oldham to the brink in early May at Whitebank, where Roughyeds edged it 33-30 after struggling for long periods.
Taking all this into account, he was delighted with the 42-30 win in the West Country, after an arduous journey down the M6 and the M5, two of the busiest motorways in the country on a summer Saturday.
“Another win, another step in the right direction,” was the Oldham boss’s opening shot before he went on to admit that he was not over-enamoured of his side’s performance over the 80 minutes.
He went on: “The first half was very good. Gloucester always start well so right from the kick-off we knew we had to match their enthusiasm, intensity and mental toughness.
“We were patient and we gradually got on top, scoring some good tries in going in at half-time sitting pretty on a 30-12 lead.
“We extended it to 36-12 early in the second half, but then our level of performance seemed to drop a bit and in no time we found ourselves under pressure.
“Gloucester and Lee Greenwood (coach) deserve huge credit. They are a vastly improved outfit and Greenwood is doing a fabulous job down there.
“We’ve got a few injuries and that didn’t help, but we’ve now got two games in a row at Whitebank against York and Rochdale, so we’ve got to get on with it.”
For the record, here are the match details from the Gloucester game:
Oldham scorers: goals, Lewis Palfrey (7); Tries, Adam Clay (2), Phil Joy, David Hewitt (2), on his debut, Danny Langtree, Jack Holmes.
