WHAT they said after the
Hornets-Oldham derby at Spotland in which Roughyeds got their NL2
campaign off to a winning start with a 46-32 triumph. They led 40-8
at one stage before Hornets stormed back with 18 unanswered points
to turn the game on its head.
Oldham coach Steve Deakin: "I have mixed emotions. The first half
was outstanding, and we started the second half okay, too. But after
that we couldn't handle Jimmy Elston jumping out of dummy half. When
leading 34-4 we put the cue back on the rack. We were weak mentally
and that will probably cost a couple of players their spots in the
side on Monday.
"I have never made any secret of the fact that I am performance
orientated. Get the performance right and other things follow. In
the second half we lowered our standards. We were slack, and we
can't afford to be slack. 32 points conceded. We are better than
that.
"Everybody played well in the first half. The bench was particularly
good. But later on we lost our concentration. We hit a comfort zone,
a lack of honesty if you like. We got the win without injury worries
and the positives do outweight the negatives.
"Having said that, I do have issues about standards, and about how
we dropped ours from about 15 minutes into the second half."
Hornets boss Bobbie Goulding: "I wasn't happy with our first-half
performance. Our completion rate was 47 per cent. Not good enough.
Credit to Oldham. They are the top side in this division and I have
said that from day one. But they don't need starts. They have
quality all over the field and I think they'll go up to NL1
automatically.
"In the second half Jimmy Elston took us forward and the lads had a
real go. Some decisions went against us and they probably cost us a
bonus point. But we came back well. Oldham were out on their feet at
the end, and our lads were still flying."
