BILL Quinn, the Oldham chairman and owner, has made it clear
publicly that he doesn't expect to see more performances as poor as
the one which produced a 26-12 defeat for the Roughyeds at Keighley
last Sunday.
In an interview with Matthew Chambers in the Oldham Evening
Chronicle, Bill laid it on the line and assured supporters that
everyone at the club was determined to put that game behind them and
move on to better and brighter things.
He said:
"We didn't show enough enthusiasm and as far as I am concerned, with
the investment that has been made in the playing squad, that just
isn't good enough. We have proved already this season that we are
better than that, and we have to get consistency going.
"The coach knows it and the team knows it -- I don't want to see a
performance like that again. We gave away too many penalties and,
coupled with a lack of enthusiasm from a number of individuals, it
cost us.
"I have always said I will be as open and honest as possible. And it
has to be said that it was just a poor performance.
"We have shown the kind of performances we are capable of putting
in, but we need to do it every week and not just when we are playing
National League One sides. We have to get it into our heads, the
fact that we have brought in the players we have and, having been
made favourites for the division, everyone wants our scalp.
"We have to toughen up and face up to that. We don't want to become
a two-dimensional team, playing and beating sides like Salford one
week and losing to, say, London Skolars or Blackpool the following
week.
" I don't want that. The players will all be bitterly disappointed.
There is no hiding place and there are no excuses to be made. We
also have to get over the standard of refereeing, rise above it, cut
out the mistakes and stop giving away penalties. We have to look
inwards -- not at the conditions, or how Keighley were playing.
"I can guarantee that is taking place. We are all of the mindset
where we know what we want to do. The team will review the game, the
coach will go through one-on-one sessions and everyone will now
focus on putting things right and moving forward."
Meanwhile, Robert Roberts will be available for selection for
Sunday's Carnegie Challenge Cup tie at Swinton --- and Lucas Onyango,
new signing Ian Hodson and, maybe, Lee Wingfield will play in the
Reserves at Salford tonight.
Hodson, of course, will not be able to play on Sunday because he is
not included on Oldham's cup register.
Talking about his return to the club, for the third time, Hodson
said: "When I knew I had the option of leaving Swinton I gave Deaks
a call because I knew Oldham were struggling for numbers. We had a
chat and I ended up signing.
"Last year was the best of my career so far and I can't wait to get
involved with Oldham again." |
