LEE SANDERSON

HALF-BACK Lee Sanderson, who made a huge impression in the Roughyeds jersey in 2007 before he was seriously injured, has been retained by Oldham on a two-year contract. The club clarifies the situation relative to the agreement and his injury history, however, by pointing out that the second year is dependent on Lee proving his fitness in year one.

"The lad has had cruel luck over the last two or three years," said chief executive Chris Hamilton, "and after his latest injury he is effectively back to square one. He understands that. We wish him all the good luck in the world. He certainly deserves some."

Interestingly, it was November 13 when Lee and Mr Hamilton sat down for Lee to put the finishing touches to the agreement by adding his signature, but understandably for a player who has had to suffer so much wretched luck, he requested it be dated November 14. Mr Hamilton was more than happy to oblige.

Added Chris: "Lee has loved his time at Oldham -- injuries apart -- and he desperately wanted to stay. He showed in his few games last season that he is more than capable as a player, as well as a goalkicker. We are pleased to give him the opportunity to rebuild his career."

Sanderson played only eight games for Roughyeds last term after his mid-season signing from Barrow. Against Barrow, at Boundary Park on May 20, he had an absolute blinder in Oldham's 50-18 victory on a day when Roughyeds produced one of their finest and most complete performances of the season.

Six weeks later, against Gateshead at Sedgley Park on July 1, he suffered a serious injury to his left knee. He ultimately had a major reconstruction of the knee and he is now fighting back and said to be ahead of schedule in his rehab.

When he had a routine visit to his specialist on December 5, fears that he might have had to undergo more surgery to sort out a troublesome surgical screw in his knee were allayed. The specialist felt time alone would solve the problem.

A fully fit Sandy will be an extremely valuable member of the squad on three counts -- as a half-back, as a hooker and as an accomplished goalkicker who will provide experienced back-up to Mick Nanyn.
