DARYL CARDISS
OLDHAM have got their man at last. They went after him last season
and failed in the attempt, but this time they fared better and they
have since announced the signing on a one-year deal for 2008 of
vastly-experienced utility back Daryl Cardiss, the former Wigan,
Halifax, Warrington and Widnes player.
Aged 30, Leeds-born Cardiss will play anywhere across the back line
and will provide cover for centre, wing, full-back, stand-off and
even hooker.
Roughyeds tried to get him on loan from Widnes last year, but it
didn't come off because of snags at the time associated with work
outside rugby and travelling problems. This time, though, there was
no mistake and the one-year deal was completed to the huge
satisfaction of the board and coach Steve Deakin.
Said chief executive Chris Hamilton: "Deaks wanted him last year. We
know his quality; he is vastly experienced; and he can play equally
well in a variety of positions.
"Widnes loaned him out to Batley towards the end of last year for
three games and in the last one he broke a bone in his shoulder. He
is fully recovered from that now. It just required a healing
process; it wasn't the normal type of shoulder joint injury which so
often require operations.
"Widnes wanted to sign him again and so did Batley, but he opted to
join us and it goes without saying that we are delighted we have got
him."
In 2001, when Mr Hamilton was manager of the England squad, Cardiss
was called up to the England party for the game against Wales at
Wrexham.
He turned pro from Hunslet Boys Club in 1994 and joined Wigan, for
whom he made 18 Super League appearances between 1996 and 1998. From
1999 to 2003 he clocked up 99 games in the elite competition for
Halifax, scoring 39 tries.
Next port of call was Warrington where, in 2003 and 2004, he added
another 25 Super League games to his tally, making 142 in total and
46 tries. He has spent the last two seasons at Widnes.
