MATTY BROOKS
MATTY Brooks, the
pocket-battleship from Hull KR who made such a big impression while
on loan to Roughyeds in 2007, is staying at the club as a
fully-fledged Oldham player.
A midfield dynamo who can operate at half-back or hooker, Brooks has
signed a one-year deal for 2008, although he will now have to make
the adjustment from full-time pro with Rovers to part-time with
Oldham.
"He is in the process of getting a job, and we are delighted to have
signed him," said the club's chief executive Chris Hamilton.
He added: "Matty proved last season, while on loan, that he is more
than capable of competing well at this level. He made an impact off
the bench with his work around the play-the-ball and his speed out
of dummy half.
"He always plays well above his weight and he gives us cover at
half-back and at hooker -- in short a player who has a lot to offer
us and a lot to offer the squad."
Brooks scored two tries in 17 appearances last season and he signed
off in style with a terrific show as a substitute in the NL2 Grand
Final.
He turned pro for Bradford Bulls and graduated through their academy
scheme before signing for the club he had always supported as a
native of East Hull --- Hull KR. He played a prominent role in
Rovers' promotion to Super League, but as the squad was strengthened
for the elite competition he was allowed out on loan to gain more
experience of first-team rugby, first to York and then to Oldham.
He quickly made a big impression here last season and after signing
initially for one month, he extended his loan to the end of the
season. Needless to say, Roughyeds were delighted when they were
able to stick hold of him for 2008.
