CHRIS BAINES
Roughyeds have completed the signing of another member of last
year's squad --- 23-year-old back-row man Chris Baines -- on a
two-year deal following the good impression he made in 2006 and
2007.
Baines made 22 appearances in 2007, but missed out at the business
end of the season when he was 18th man in the three play-off games
and then the Grand Final. He has, however, signed a new two-year
contract to the delight of Deaks and the board.
Said chief executive Chris Hamilton: "Several other clubs in the
division have been chasing Chris and he was undecided what to do
because he has no guarantee of first-team rugby here. But we are
delighted to confirm that we have managed to persuade him to stay.
He's a valuable member of the squad and a really good bloke as well.
"He was unlucky not to be in the 17 at the end of last season, but
he understands the reasons. His rugby has improved a lot in his time
at Oldham and the general belief at the club is that there is more
of that to come."
A product of Wigan St Pat's, he toured New Zealand with Great
Britain Young Lions in 2003 after representing his country at youth
level against Australia and France.
He was in his third season of under-21s rugby at Warrington when he
first joined Oldham in in the ill-fated relegation campaign of 2006.
He had three separate and continuous one-month loan spells and when
Warrington said they would release him he had no hesitation in
accepting the chance to sign for Oldham until the end of that
season.
He was one of the few players from 2006 to be re-signed for 2007 --
a sign of the esteem in which he was held by Oldham.
