This summer the RFL and Leeds Met Carnegie are joining forces to organise two walking events, entitled the Side by Side Challenges, to raise money for the RFL Benevolent Fund.

The walks are open to the whole Rugby League community with the aim of raising £30,000 for the RFL Benevolent Fund which provides support and assistance to those individuals who have been severely injured playing the sport of Rugby League.

The first Challenge between 22 and 25 June involves walking along the entire length of Hadrian's Wall and is already fully subscribed. This National Trail is an unbroken 84 miles, stretching from coast to coast and it is expected to take walkers around four days to complete. The RFL and Leeds Met are on the look out for volunteers who are integral to making the challenge happen. Please contact carnegiegreatoutdoors@leedsmet.ac.uk for further information regarding volunteering opportunities.

The second event on 31 July is the 'Yorkshire Three Peaks' Challenge and will involve walkers climbing the three highest peaks in the county (Penyghent, Whernside and Ingleborough). The aim is for 300 people to take part in the 25 mile long challenge and it is open to everyone. Not only is it a superb opportunity to raise money for a worthwhile charity but is also a chance for supporters to rub shoulders with former players and members of the rugby league media whilst taking in the stunning scenery of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Phil Clarke, RFL Benevolent Fund trustee and former Great Britain captain, said: "I'm really looking forward to both of these Challenges which are for a great cause.

"The Benevolent Fund helps people who have been injured playing Rugby League and this is an excellent way for people to contribute to this charity.

"The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge will bring the entire Rugby League community together and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone there."

Chip McClure, Leeds Met Carnegie's RFL Partnership Manager, is looking forward to participating in both events this year: "Leeds Met Carnegie and the Carnegie Great Outdoors team are proud to support the RFL Benevolent Fund. Last year's challenge was tough but hugely enjoyable and gave me a sense of personal achievement whilst contributing to a great cause."

Registration for the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge is just £10 per person and all participants are asked to raise a minimum of £100 sponsorship for the RFL Benevolent Fund The Carnegie Great Outdoors team of qualified and experienced expedition leaders will be providing support and refreshments for walkers.

Due to the demand and duration of the challenge, a good level of fitness and a clean bill of health, without recent injury, is essential for all applicants.
