Robert Roberts, the Oldham captain, is going to be out of action for
four or five weeks because of his troublesome hand injury --- and it
might even be considerably longer. That was the latest news from the
Roughyeds camp today following the inspirational back-row forward's
latest visit to hospital.
It has now emerged that the fracture is not to the scaphoid -- the
bone that connects the thumb to the wrist --- but to a small bone
that runs alongside the scaphoid.
'Two Bobs' returned from hospital with his thumb and wrist in
plaster and with the news that, if surgery is not required, his hand
will be immobilised in the 'pot' for four weeks. Presumably, he
would then require a little more time for rehab before he was ready
to play again.
The decision about surgery will be made on Monday when he goes back
to hospital yet again, this time for another scan and to see a hand
specialist. If he needs an operation he will be presumably be out of
action for even longer.
The news comes as another blow for coach Steve Deakin who heard only
24 hours ago that both Matty Brooks and Simon Baldwin need minor
knee operations, which are expected to sideline them for between
four to six weeks.
With several other players also on the casualty list, the side to
face Whitehaven at Boundary Park on Sunday in the last 16 of the
National Rail Cup is likely to face little, if no change, from that
which beat York City Knights last Sunday to make it three wins from
three in Co-operative NL2.
