THE Rugby League has confirmed that any club wishing to apply for a licence to join Super League in 2012 must qualify for the National League One Grand Final in 2009 or 2010.

This makes it even more imperative that if Oldham are to hold on to their ambitions of Super League status in 2012 they need to win promotion from NL2 this year in order to give themselves two bites at the cherry in terms of playing in the NL1 Grand Final.

Any Super League application for entry in 2012 must be submitted to RFL headquarters by January, 2011 -- and that isn't far away in the grand scheme of things.

It has emerged that a final decision on the make-up of the elite competition in 2012 will be made in July, 2011 with at least one National League side guaranteed a spot, providing it matches up to requirements and it has made the statutory Grand Final appearance in 2009 or 2010.

The make-up of next year's Super League will be announced in July. It is widely expected that the competition will be expanded from 12 to 14 clubs, with applications having already been received from the current 12 clubs plus several more, including Salford City Reds, Widnes Vikings, Leigh Centurions, Celtic Crusaders and French club Toulouse.

Applicants will be tested on such factors as quality of stadium, financial turnover, facilities, size of fan base, home-grown player development, community work and business plan.
