OLDER Roughyeds fans will remember the days when evening newspaper
sellers would stand on street corners, screaming things like: "Five
o'clock winner!" or perhaps:
"Oldham RL latest . . . read all about it."
If you were Nigel Marland, for example, you were probably keen to
know if you had won a few bob on the 5 o'clock race at Kempton or
Haydock. There would be nothing to read about the race, but there in
'the box' or 'the fudge' ('stop press' to non-newspaper folk) would
be given the result.
Modern technology has removed the need for 'stop press' news so it
has disappeared along with many other features of journalism and
newspapers from a bygone, yet a magical, age for those of us who
were lucky enough to be brought up in it. Please forgive this
newspaper nostalgia from an old hack who should know better. And do
you know what brought it on?
Roughyeds asked me today to circulate news of the: "Five Alive
Winner!". Get it?
"Five Alive Winner". "Five o'clock winner" --- not much difference
really. Shows how my mind works. And how it occasionally meanders
back into the mists of time. Get a life!
Anyway, here goes. I can't promise a mention in the 'stop press'.
But I can tell all 80-odd members of Five Alive (and all you
thousands of Roughyeds fans who might be considering joining!!!!)
that the latest monthly winner of the £500 first prize is a very
loyal and devoted fan of the club, Roy Wood. The numbers that won it
for Roy were FA/028.
I and C Kershaw, more keen supporters of the club, took second prize
of Boundary Park hospitality suite places for two at a forthcoming
home match. FA/042 were the numbers that did it for them.
Finally, Jeffrey Bates (FA/019) won the third prize of a £25 voucher
for the club shop. Another satisfied customer and a loyal supporter.
I guess everyone in Five Alive has no shortage of love for the club.
At £5 a week it isn't for everyone. For those preferring a more
modest outlay with which to give the club a lift there is the Club
Cash lottery at only £1 a week.
But for regular supporters who attend matches frequently and feel
they can afford £5 a week there are certainly lots of attractions
built into Five Alive. Just to jog the memory the three prizes
outlined above are offered MONTHLY -- and the odds against landing a
£500 purse 12 times a year are not bad considering there are only
80-something numbers in the draw.
You also get a car park pass for the season; a club tie for men; a
voucher for the Tymbuktu beauty salon for the ladies; your name in
the programme; four lunches per year; use of the vice-presidents'
pay bar at Boundary Park pre and post match; and, where applicable,
a ten per cent discount on all club sponsorships.
Incidentally, the next quarterly lunch is this Friday, April 4 at
Mario's, Yorkshire
Street, Oldham at 11.45am for noon. Club captain Robert 'Two Bobs'
Roberts will do a questions and answers session after lunch,
following in the footsteps of head coach Steve Deakin who performed
similarly at the last Five Alive lunch, also at Mario's.
More are planned for Friday, July 4; Friday, October 3; and Friday,
December 5. So make a note in your diaries and if there is anyone
out there possibly considering becoming a member then please contact
the club on 0161 628 3677 to seek further information and,
hopefully, to join.
The club is currently about 15 or 16 short of reaching its ultimate
target of 100
members and it would love to get there pretty quickly as we look
forward to what should be a terrific season of NL2 rugby. You can
join any time, of course, and your membership would be hugely
appreciated, but with benefits which include things like car park
pass and use of the VP bar it would probably make sense to join
sooner rather than later if you are intending to be present at most
of our games.
You never know. You might just be a . . . "FIVE ALIVE WINNER!"
. . . . and then wecould: "READ ALL ABOUT IT!"
