ROUGHYEDS were keeping fingers crossed today that Robert Roberts's
scaphoid injury might not keep him out of action for as long as was
first feared.
An x-ray proved inconclusive. A bone scan yesterday established that
the scaphoid (connecting thumb to wrist) IS fractured, but the
specialist cannot be sure whether it is the result of an old injury
or a new one.
'Two Bobs' will go back to hospital again tomorrow while checks and
tests continue. He has been told that if the specialist concludes it
is a new injury the hand will have to go into plaster. If the
verdict is old-injury the specialist will leave well alone.
"In those circumstances we would give 'Two Bobs' another couple of
weeks rest for the injury to settle down and then he would have to
live with it," said coach Steve Deakin. "We'll know more later in
the week."
Looking ahead to the visit of NL1 club Whitehaven to Boundary Park
on Sunday (3pm) in the last 16 of the Northern Rail Cup, Deaks said
everything at training last night went according to plan and there
was nothing new to report.
Asked about the change of coaching personnel at the Recreation
Ground, he said: "To be honest what goes on at Whitehaven is not my
concern, but I am sure there will be something of the 'new coach'
syndrome in their performance, as there probably was at Widnes on
Sunday.
"Having said that, if we prepare well and we bring our 'A' game to
Boundary Park on Sunday I am confident we will get the right
result."
Oldham, unbeaten at Boundary Park since Celtic Crusaders won here
last August, go into this sudden-death knock-out tie with the
knowledge that they have already turned over one NL1 side on home
soil this season when they beat Salford City Reds 18-14 in
mid-February.
The new Oldham reserves team goes into league action for the first
time tomorrow (Wednesday) night when they play Leigh Centurions at
Hilton Park (kick off 7.30pm).
They should have opened up at Salford on Easter Monday, but the game
was due to be a curtain-raiser to Salford's NL1 match and after
heavy and incessant rain it was postponed in order to protect The
Willows pitch.
